Newborn Preparation

I set up the seen and wait for beauty to unfold.  You will be directed where to stand, or how to hold the baby. Then I will ask perhaps your youngest to stand next to you and look up. Nothing more. But then the magic happens.  I try to keep the sessions, fun and spontaneous while still trying to keep the mood calm and relaxed.

If you are planning your newborn shoot for your first baby it is normal to feel nervous. You are probably sleep deprived and ready for a holiday. Part of capturing your family’s milestones it is also to help you prepare and enjoy the session.

Planning your newborn shoot

We need a well-fed and content baby, feeding, burping and changing the diaper just before I arrive gives us a good head start. We do take short breaks in between to feed the baby so we will not allow your baby to be hungry.

Clothes

Select natural colours to wear for your newborn shoot. We want to have all the attention on the baby. Think pastels or earth tone colours preferably in shades for instance blue and cream. Dad can pair a white or natural colour shirt with a jean or chinos.

If you decide to be barefoot, everyone needs to be barefoot.

Make sure you are all comfortable in your outfits the day before.

Props for the shoot

Walk through your home and select items you might want to use for your photo shoot. It is always great if you add a special toy/gift that the baby received from a significant person. Toys also help the other children to have fun, play and allow me to capture beautiful natural moments. Select a blanket that we will be using during the shoot, that will blend in with your colour selection. Pets can also be included.  Make sure they are clean, brushed and have plenty of treats ready for me to use during the shoot.

Getting ready

Feed everyone, and keep snacks for little people close by (Snacks that will not stain or be very messy like watermelon, nick nacks etc).

Preparing the room for the shoot

Choose either the master bedroom or the baby’s room for the photo session, the room with the most natural light and the biggest windows.

Take away the clutter that is not supposed to be in the room. A warm and cozy room temperature helps to keep the precious little one happy.

What you need to know about the shoot

We will not be shooting all the time. You will have time to feed and change your baby.

During the newborn shoot

We do a big family portrait, different combinations of people with the baby and then just the baby. During this time, we follow the pace of the baby.

After the shoot

You will receive your images 10 days after the shoot, just in time to celebrate your baby’s 20th day.
